细胞因子/免疫细胞因子最初用于将免疫调节蛋白（也称为免疫递质）与调节非免疫细胞增殖和生物活性的其他生长因子分离。一些细胞因子由数量相当有限的不同细胞类型产生，而其他细胞因子由几乎所有已知细胞类型产生。细胞因子在生物活性和全身水平上类似于激素，例如炎症、全身炎症反应综合征、急性期反应、伤口愈合和神经免疫网络。
生长因子是人体制造的一种蛋白质分子，它的功能是调节细胞分裂和细胞存活。生长因子也可以在实验室中通过基因工程产生并用于生物治疗。
